Uri L'Tzedek launches search for social justice project at SAR High school. The winning proposal will address the Jewish value of social justice through action. The proposal should address a systemic social justice issue, such as poverty, health, housing, or prejudice. The project proposal should have a concrete, achievable goal, that will include an initial phase and long term follow up. Finally, the proposal will also include the student's greater community.

Four idealistic religious social activists started making the rounds among rabbis and other religious leaders four years ago, to see if perhaps they were missing something. Assaf, Chili, Efrat and Shmuli had grown up together in Jerusalem, been through the religious youth movements, yeshivas, army — but they were troubled. Times in Israel were difficult. In 1978, Friedrich Hayek, whose work and influence we commemorate tonight, proposed a great debate. He was by then almost eighty years old, but the passion with which he sought to defend the market order against what he saw as the heresy of collectivism was undiminished. So, as if hoping to settle the issue once and for all, he suggested...

Political or social activism was hardly the hallmark of American Orthodox rabbis in the 1960s. While a number of Conservative and Reform rabbis participated in the civil rights movement or protested U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War, their Orthodox counterparts typically regarded such causes as too far removed from Jewish concerns to justify their involvement. From the standpoint of the Torah, there can be no distinction between one human being and another on the basis of race or color. Any discrimination shown to a human being on account of the color of his or her skin constitutes loathsome barbarity. It must be conceded that the Torah recognizes a distinction between a Jew and a non-Jew. The recent events in Postville , Iowa that have aroused so much passion in the community compel us to examine what Jewish sources have to say about workers' rights. Join us for a Beit Midrash with Rabbi Mike Schultz as he explores these sources and how they address this very important issue.

Send peace to the people of Darfur.

The bereaved, the injured,
And all those who live their days in fear.

Middah Reflection #3 - Savlanut vs. Zrizut, Patience vs. Alacrity

Activism requires a very calculated and sensitive balance between patience and alacrity. On the one hand, one must have the patience for teaching and engaging the apathetic and the uninformed. On the other hand, one must also have the alacrity to respond to crises and injustices at the most crucial time. Most often the precise timing that necessitates immediate action precedes the completion of the essential education and mobilization of the public. This is one of the reasons why the...

Anivut (humility) has a very special priority in positive Jewish self development. Rav Kook wrote (The Moral Principles, page 174) that “Humility is associated with spiritual perfection. When humility effects depression it is defective, when it is genuine it inspires joy, courage, and inner dignity.” In short, humility should not diminish our special personality traits; rather it should help us to become unique moral courageous agents of...

Social Action or Spiritual Practice: Which is the Priority? By Alan Morinis, Director of the Mussar Institute

The title of this essay makes no sense to me. To set up social action on one hand and spiritual practice on the other, as if these could be considered separable alternatives, seems to me like asking, “Which is more important for life: brains or heart?” Try living without either of them.
And yet this is precisely an argument that goes on, because some activists disparage the introspective, contemplative approaches to living that come under the heading of spirituality, while people...

Responsibility is one of the most important midot to cultivate in one’s soul. Acharayut (responsibility in Hebrew) comes from the root “acher” (other). To take responsibility means to cultivate the “ability” for response” to an “other.” This responsibility to another is born in the moment where no one else is present to assist. As Hillel said (Avot 2:6 “uveemkom sh’ain anashim hishtadail lihiyot ish”: in a place where there aren’t people of moral courage taking responsibility, one needs to step...

On May 20, we joined Domestic Workers United for a day of lobbying in Albany. Our handful of Uri L’tzedek activists were only some of the dozens of Jews who boarded the busses early that morning to show our solidarity with New York’s domestic workers. As the bus made its way up through the State, each passenger was handed the microphone to briefly explain what had motivated him or her to take the day and travel to Albany. Over and over we heard how fervently Judaism cares about the rights of...

As we reflect upon the meaning of our own freedom, we must open our eyes to the reality that many who live in our midst are still enslaved. Every year, tens of thousands of young women vanish from their everyday lives and are forced by violence into a hellish existence of brutality and prostitution. Human trafficking is one of the world's most abhorrent forms of modern day slavery, and is prevalent in both the United States and Israel. Come and learn about what Jewish texts and traditions have...
